Blog Post #15
As I read through my first blog I realized I haven't changed my thoughts as to how I will run my classroom but I will broaden the horizon! In my first blog I wanted to have my students involved in open discussion, to think outside the box, complete hands on projects and introduce them to new technology tools. After taking EDM 310 I have realized I can incorporate all of these things with the use of technology.
I have learned that there are so many ways to have open discussions with my students inside and outside of the classroom. I would like to have my students create a blog to help voice their opinions. This will allow them to also have discussion with not only classmates but with people around the world. Parents and family can also comment on their blogs and in doing so I believe it will help the students build confidence and know that what they have to say is important.
In my first blog I said that I want my students to think outside the box. In a nutshell this means NO BURP BACK education as Dr. Strange would say. I would like to give my students different projects to complete and allow them to complete the problem solving and come up with a way to finish the assignment. Once the student knows how to learn to learn the possibilities are endless.
Of course as I said in my first post i want to have hands on projects. This goes hand in hand with all my other topics. I still want to have hand on projects but maybe change the projects into iMovies or podcast. These are still hands on because the students have to learn how to make these and do the research while making them. I want to incorporate all the new tools I was introduced to this semester into my classroom as much as possible! Thank You Dr. Strange!

Project #13
Our group, JAM, decided to use face time, Google docs and Google chat options while planning our smart board project. We came up with a lesson plan while face-timing each other. We all agreed on doing a lesson plan about identifying the parts in a plant cell. Chelsea looked up the vocabulary that would go with the lesson then she shared the document with me and Callie to be sure we were all still on the same page. I found a lesson on Smart Board Exchange for us to use that went with what we already had. On Google chat we discussed how each of us would take part in the lesson. Once we all agreed and were done with the lesson we met and filmed us identifying the plant cell. Chelsea was the teacher while me and Callie were students in her class.

C4K Summary for April
Mackenzie G.
My eighth C4K was for Mackenzie, an eighth grade student from Iowa in Mr. Boylen's Language Arts class. In her latest blog she had to summarize "The Fault In Our Stars" by John Green. She tells that this novel is about a young girl going through stage 4 thyroid cancer. Her parents make her go through therapy in which she me3ets new people and one person by the name Augustus Waters catches her eyes.
I enjoyed reading Mackenzie's short summary and she has left me wanting to read this book! In my comment I made sure to tell her that she did a great job in telling about the book but not giving away to much detail. By doing this she has made the book appealing to me and I'm sure many others!
Brayden
My ninth C4K was for Brayden, a sixth grade student in Mr.Chamberlain's class. In his latest post he wrote a creative story of how Mr.Chamberlain did not go to an education convention, instead, he went to the Caribbean Islands on a cruise with his wife and four kids! In his story Mr. Chamberlain returns to his "fat boy recliner" where he stays watching t.v. and eats until he gaines four pounds.
When leaving my comment I told him that I loved the masked humor of how his teacher "plops down" to eat Twix ice cream while watching House after a vacation in the Caribbean Islands! I also added that I bet Mr. Chamberlain was probably happy to back to his normal life in his lazy boy instead of being stuck in a small crowded cabin with six family members! Then I asked him where would you like to go on your vacation?
Jess's Joyful Blog
My tenth C4K was for Jess, a student in 4km from Leopold Australia. The two latest post on her blog went together as a guessing game. The first post was about her new idea of taking a picture of a famous person and then distorting the image to where it has a different look. Then she has viewers guess as to who the famous person is. The second post of course list who the person is and gives the name of the person who guessed correctly. She also asked for viewers opinions of her new ides. I left a comment on the most recent post and told her I loved her idea. I noticed she likes playing the guitar so I asked her if she could use the same concept and distort the sound of her guitar and have people guess what song it was. I hope to see her reply because I would love to hear her play!

Blog Post #14
Teacher Knows if You Have Done the E-Reading
"Big Brother" is the best way to put it. This article discusses how teachers can easily log in and see if and when students read the E-Readers. It debates the "Big Brother" effect being appropriate for students. Students have different personal lives, different study habits and different schedules. Throughout this article debates are heard from a variety of students with these same issues. Teachers are confused because a number of students who don't open the E-Reader make passing grades whereas a number of students that visit E-Reader have failing grades. How can this be regulated? After all the students that show that they have not logged into E-Reader may study from different sources.
As a teacher I think the E-Reader is a good source to use when looking for techniques of teaching for the classroom. I would first look at the data given study habits vs. test scores. Once I go over these I then would know what needs to be discussed in class. I would maybe assign a certain passage from the E-Reader and have specific students tell about the passage during class. This may help the students participate and read about the topics.
As a Student I would appreciate the E-Reader. Yes, it may be a "Big Brother" system but this only weaves out the students that are not up to par in assignments. Just like the "Big Brother" system on our red lights, this is only an advantage to the people that obey the rules because it punishes the people that disobeys the rules. I feel this would be the same concept. I wouldn't not care if the teacher sees what I do as far as studying because I will do whats necessary to learn the information so I have nothing to hide.
Questions I would ask the teacher in article:
1. How did you approach the situation when you noticed that the student was not studying from the E-Reader?
2. Did you change your teaching habits after you realized that a number of students was not benefiting from the E-Readers the way they should?
3. Did you encourage the students to use the E-Reader before your discovery or did you believe the students would take it upon themselves to study this?
4. Does the E-reader really make a difference with your teaching or do you feel your job would require the same from you with or without the E-Reader?
Questions I would have for the students in article:
1. After the teacher confronted you did you change your study habits? If so, did you see a change in your grades after the change?
2. Do you feel you could learn just as much from the internet as the E-Reader and is it fair to have a company play "Big Brother" and decide if you have good/bad study habits just because the E-Reader shows you haven't logged in?
3. What is the Advantages/Disadvantages of the E-reader?
The comment I would leave for this post would be:
This is DEFINITELY "Big Brother". Looking at the "Big Brother" approach what exactly is the results of it? I believe it only points out the students that are behind on class reading/work. So as long as you accept the role of a student and know that you are responsible to complete assignments. Even if the only way reading is regulated is through the E-Reader a student should want to read the information for lesson. The reading offers topics that may not be covered during lecture so the student would only be cheating themselves.

Project #9
Final Report for PLN
My personal learning network has improved considerably this semester in EDM 310. I have found many people in and out of the education field who can help me throughout my career as an educator. I believe that the most important part of my PLN is elaborating with my classmates who I have interacted with during EDM310. I continue to use my Twitter to meet and talk to educators that will help to instruct me by ideas they post. I will continue to use my PLN for my career and personnel life. It helps me organize tools and it helps make things easier as I learn the ins and outs of educating future students and myself!

C4T Post #4
Doc Horse Tales
My C4T Post #4 Comment #1 was for Text Mentor Text Live Text post by Joseph McCaleb discusses how word association has changes over time. This actually makes me think of a popular country song by Tim McGraw "Back When". He discusses how "back when" text was associated with the bible, where as, now when someone say text we automatically think of cell phones and email. This also contributes to the thought of mentor text. The "old" thoughts would be to use a book. Now we can have a more up-to-date or "live" meaning. We can see the most recent thoughts of a specific topic at the click of a button. Technology can be incorporated in daily task throughout all subjects; Math, reading, science, etc. One of the examples he listed was that Ms. Nicholson a second grade teacher had students read "Charlotte's Web" and then had them develop a research project by using technology. They had to "write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section". So by using technology the students were able to learn a little more about technology, science, and writing/English. I can see where math could be incorporated in this lesson plan with different types of graphs or diagrams with information about spiders.
My comment I left said,"Hi, My name is Charlene Wiggins and I am currently enrolled in EDM310 at University of South Alabama. I'm glad I received your blog to read over as an assignment because your post is so informative. I love the idea of Text and Mentor Text in everyday classrooms. I feel that the students will interact during class and learn more when teachers add different technology for projects in lectures. Thank You for the wonderful post I will definitely keep the ideas in mind when I become a teacher!" I was glad to see that he commented back to me! He said, "Thank you for the comment. Blogging into hyperspace (whatever that is) has a strange free-fall feel to it. While freedom and solitude have high value to me (and are perhaps undervalued in our teaching profession), the web also offers gives us a rather unique opportunity to network and to search out like-minded folks. Good luck with creating your professional learning network and please express my appreciation to your professor for encouraging this aspect of your career."
My C4T #4 Comment #2 was for Main-Idea on Auto Pilot by Joseph McCaleb. This post describes how students that do not understand things automatically think that those topics are stupid. Those students need to be redirected by teachers so that they realize that the unfamiliar can actually be interesting. His example:
"Once Nasruddin was searching frantically around a light post. It was a dark and foggy night. A friend approached and helped him look, but after finding nothing Nasruddin’s co-laborer finally asks, “Are you sure this is where you lost it?” Nasruddin replies, “No, I’m sure it wasn't here, but this is where I can see best.”
His post goes on to discuss ways to teach students to find the light in the dark. In my eyes finding the light is much more important than automatically being in the light. Part of my comment said, " I just wanted to say this post really hits home. I for one was the student that would stay close to comfort. Now that I am in Dr. Stange's EDM 310 class I have realized how important it is to run from burp back education. The projects that I have learned to create this semester will be with me for the rest of my life. I'm sure the steps will change when technology gradually improves but for the most part I have a start. I could have learned these things on my own if I would had veered away from the "light" and accepted new information before taking this class but because humans natural instinct is comfort I never looked much farther into what I already knew. I plan to teach my students this exact concept of looking for a new pattern to learn. As for myself I love to learn so I will continue using this concept in my everyday activities." I feel that Doc Horse Tales has many important information that teachers can use and I plan to follow him on Twitter so that I can keep myself updated with his thoughts that most people don't think about!

Special Assignment #2
I actually included both parts in my Blog Post #13 I just wanted to make sure that I added a little bit about Boozeman Science page. When looking over his page he has everything organized on the left side. The one option that really caught my eye was his journals and videos. Within his journals he has a variety of accomplishments that he has completed or he is working on. Under supporters he has who has helped him listed. (I think its a good idea to try and find them on Twitter and follow them.) He also has his videos listed. Yes he may be a high school teacher but he has a lot to offer to all ages. Next Generation Science Standards video shows how all science classes (or all classes) should be broke down to Practices, Concepts and Ideas. He explains topics well and teachers should definitely add him to their PLN. He has many good ideas to offer!

Blog Post #13
Blended Learning Cycle
Bozeman Science teacher discusses a wonderful way of teaching by using the Blended Learning cycles. His first step is The Question. The Question should be the hook that grabs the students attention. Once you have the students attention then allow them to investigate. Have them find answers or come up with some sort of hypothesis. then he uses video for the actual class lecture. By doing this it helps him have more time for class discussion. The students can watch the videos at any time and as many times as needed to gather information. Once the students have watched the videos then the teacher can elaborate with them. The student scan help the teacher make graphs and diagrams to explain what is happening. His next step is to review. He has small study groups, after he asks all groups questions and is sure they understand the content then they are allowed to take the summary test. the summary quiz is when the students discuss in details what they have learned throughout the lesson. After they have completed all of his steps to QUIVERS they are allowed to take the paper test. I feel that using these steps can open class time up for more discussion and hands on activities. I believe that this can help the students venture away from burp back education and actually gain the knowledge that is there for them to learn.
Back To The Future
Brian Crosby is a fourth grade teacher in a low income society. Students that are in his class are living in poverty and they are not taught basics at home such as addresses, phone numbers or even what country they live in. He uses technology in his class and has his students interact with people around the world. He discusses how students need to think out of the box. The children use many applications to share information that they are learning and information they are organizing. Some of the applications his students use are wiki, flickr, blogs, and skype. His students began to expand their personal learning networks by sharing their projects and blogs to people around the world. The point he is trying to make is to think outside the box and outside of the text books. Allow the students to benefit from the technology of today and teach them how to learn. In his video his students looked interested in what they were learning. The students were learning to learn as they took the information given and organized it in their own personal way by blogging. When students are able to learn the information on their own it gives them the chance of actually grasping the concepts.

Progress Report for Final Project
I am really excited about "JAM's" final project. It is coming along rather quickly. We have all recording completed. We also have the storyboard created. A few more changes and it will be complete. As a group I think we have done a good job with having an interesting story plot while discussing the key points as to how to "Stay Alive" in EDM-310. I feel that our Final Project is entertaining and beneficial for future EDM-310 students. STAY TUNED!!!!

Blog Post #12
4Teachers is a useful link that elementary teachers use. Go to this site and watch the first video Cyber Summit on 21st Century Skills and write a response of what the video was about and your opinion of the program. Browse the site. Also in your post include three tools you found on this website that will help you in your career as a teacher and explain what each tool could help with. Success Stories is a link listed on the 4Teachers site. Go to this link and choose one story from a teacher or a student and explain what was discussed in the testimony. Then be sure to look for teacher or student on Twitter and send them a thank you tweet for their testimony. Remember to save this to your PLN it can be very beneficial!
My Assignment
Cyber Summit on 21st Century Skills video makes a good point by discussing when adding technology teachers need to keep the ball rolling. I think this is important because if we have time for bumps in the road then that opens time for people to realize things are changing and lets face it change is intimidating. When working with younger students introducing them to new technology daily will help them become motivated. As the teacher, Kim Herron, says in the video "I don't think learning should be inside four walls and in one textbook." I stand by this one statement. This teacher allows her students to create a virtual museum to study about civilizations. The students were able to work together and learn new exciting things. Each student was given a specific task that suited them. This is almost like a field trip. Everything is hands on with the students completing the work so that the information sinks in and the cost is almost free!Technology also gives struggling students a new window to learning. It gives them advantages of collaborating with their classmates and working together. I love the thought of this. If only everyone could build from the positive factors of technology the world could be such a more productive and better place.
When looking over the site I actually created my own classroom (Of course for the free 30 day trial period). I included all of my children as my students, by doing so I have got to play teacher a little through online games with my children for homework. This site allows me to post their individual assignments in which they log in under their name to see and it keeps up with their progress. My Son has problems with spelling so I had him play some games for spelling. One of my favorites for spelling was Kitten Hop. The computer calls a word out and you have to select the ball that contains the correct letters to spell them. All of my children enjoyed Jet Ski typing, Jet Ski Race and Frogs. Jet Ski typing comes in handy especially with my second grader. They have changes their spelling test from paper to computer. I saw a tremendous drop in his grades when this happened because he was spending so much time looking for the right keys that he would forget what he was typing. He actually enjoys playing this game because he is competitive and it give you the option to play with children around the world while saving his progress.
Kathy Gathers testimony discusses different ways to teach children keyboarding techniques. She has started her first graders off with keyboarding by having them practice five minutes a day. I feel that this will help the children tremendously. It goes along with the video. Baby steps will keep the ball rolling but also have the students comfortable and not overwhelmed to learn. She uses a visual technique by having a picture of hands with the fingers numbered so that when a child gets frustrated she can easily say right finger number three to help them locate the keys. She list many sites and tools elementary teachers would value for daily routines. She will definitely be added to my Twitter Account! Unfortunately the only aspect that I didn't like about this site is that the last time it was updated was in 2001. The sites and testimonies are beneficial but so many things have changes since then.

C4T Post #3
Scott Mcleod's Dangerously Irrelevant
My C4T Post #3 Comment #1 was for Scott Mcleod. In his post he refers to Mimi Ito's thoughts of how parents have negative views on internet learning and how children have positive views on it. She also says that younger people use this not only for learning but also for their social lives. As far as them using it for education the internet is a better choice for anyone because of the convenience.
My thoughts on this situation is simple. Times have changed we need to make some changes also. We should learn to bridge the gap between older and younger generations. We should take advantage of the convenience the internet has to offer. We shouldn't turn our heads on better ideas. Lets face it using the technology lately just means less work. Why not make it easier on ourselves?
My C4T Post #3 Comment #2 was also for Scott Mcleod. In his latest post he uses Quirky kids, Frisbee, and dead fish slides to help show how schools are continuing "burp back education". Quirky Kids uses sarcasm while showing how standardization has deleted creativity. Frisbee slide simply says, " being good at school is a little like being good at Frisbee, It's nice but it's not relevant." Dead Fish slide shows how schools are only stuffing kids with information.
When I read these three slides I have to say I laughed out loud. Yes, they are funny but they are sad because it's true. As a teacher I plan to of course go by state curriculum because it's my job but it's also my job to introduce my students to new things and to make school interesting. I believe I can accomplish this by spending time on planning new and exciting ways for my students to learn.

C4K Summary for March
Celicia
My fifth C4K was for Celicia, a fifth grade student in Mrs Goerends class. She had to write how her life would be different without the first amendment. She tells how the first amendment makes it OK for her to have a freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and press. Celicia shows that this important to her because she can be friends with everybody.
When commenting on her post I told her its great that she appreciates diversity. I then asked her to think how much different her life would be without it. I also asked her how would she feel if her freedom was taken away from her would she stand for her country.
Jake
My sixth C4K was for Jack, a seventh grade student in Ms. Lentine's class. He told how he believed William Kamkwamba was successful in his first attempt in his homemade windmill that produces energy because he was able to create energy. I believe he has made an adequate observation, although I believe he may have misread his assignment. I believe the teacher wanted him to see that it was experimentation that made this possible so I made sure to include in my comment that Kamkwamba was successful but I'm sure he made many attempts before coming to his final product. He also believes that one way to make school better is to allow everyone free time during the day for fun and games to help relax. He feels that telling his teacher will help broadcast his idea. I believe telling his teacher is a good idea but I also told him he should benefit from technology and use his blog to spread his ideas around the world. I also told him that fun time is good time but we can also learn while having fun. I then asked him to give some exciting games that could be useful during class time
Isara
My seventh C4K was for Isara, a seventh grade student in Miss. King's class from Pt England School, Auckland N.Z. In Isara's latest blog she gives her opinions on why we have Easter Eggs. She tells of how she thinks eggs are a a good symbol of life since hens and lizards lay eggs and this gives new life. I was sure to tell her that I believe she is on the right track and she has a good idea as to why we use eggs for Easter. I also challenged her with the question, What other items could we use for Easter that could possibly resemble some of the same things.

Little Kids, Big Potential
Mrs. Cassidy's first grade students show how they use blogs, webpages, wikis, videos, Skype, and Nintendo DS to learn as a team. When the students spoke of using blogs they included that they get better at writing with every blog post they make. By using blogs they have also learned how to comment on blogs in a positive way. I feel that I would use blogs within my classroom because they teach concepts that are important and would make it interesting for students to learn and interact with each other through the internet. I would also like to have a class webpage so that my students can easily access topics that we are currently covering at their convenience. It would be fun to use Wikis so that the students can interact with children of the same ages in other countries and be able to compare their different lifestyles. Videos would come in handy within my classroom when the children would like to post their accomplishments on the class webpage. I feel that if positive comments are left on the videos the students would have the desire to continue to work hard. I love how Mrs. Cassidy uses Skype to allow her students to interact with experts. This is like having an on campus field trip. Nintendo DS is a great way to show the students how to share with one another. Allowing the students to use "games" to learn could possibly grab attention of the ones that are less likely to listen during lectures.

Adventures in Pencil Integration It is clear that he is using pencils to resemble the "I'm a Mac, I'm a P.C." commercial. It's obvious that the Ticonderoga is suppose to be the number one pencil and paper mate is suppose to be the cheaper made pencil. So this cartoon is saying that the cheaper made PC is more likely to break down. The Mac is more expensive and only the "HIP" people buy these computers. I feel that at the end both pencils will get the job done. I agree that the Mac is more expensive and they offer more but I have to say I am happy with my cheap PC. It has served its purpose and will continue to until it "breaks."
"Why Were Your Kids playing Games?" is where a teacher and principal were fussing between memorization and keeping students engaged. The principal continues to shoot the teacher's ideas down that helps gain the attention of the students. The teacher continues to defend himself with why he is using drawing and games to help students understand what they are reading. The irony of the principal saying no to this idea is that he makes sure to say that he has an "Open Door Policy." To me I would think that this could also mean that he is open to new ideas. Unfortunately he would rather stick to "burp-back" education instead of the students actually learning the topics being discussed by using interesting games.
"Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff, Please" is someone looking down on technology and list the downfalls that could happen but whats the odds? Really? ...teach them the appropriate way to technology and then they will lead the way .This post reeks of sarcasm but definitely gets the point across. If parents are so concerned with whats on the internet then they should try and find out what is out there. Many people kick new things before they try it. There are upgrades in technology daily. So within a week who can say that it is really all that new. If more people would try and keep up with the changes then they will discover that technology is only here to help. If it can benefit us, why not use it? We shouldn't hold our children back now, now is the time to allow them to explore with new advances as much as possible. It will be beneficial in the long run!
I have been assigned to post on Scott McLeod's Dangerously Irrelevant two separate times now. Just by looking over his blog it is very clear that he stands behind technology in education. After looking for a little more information I found that he is currently on leave from University of Kentucky. He is the founding director of CASTLE. CASTLE stands for Center for the advanced study of Technology Leadership in Education. CASTLE is dedicated to schools administrators technology needs. Scott McLeod tries to spread his thoughts on technology issues daily through his blog Dangerously Irrelevant.

What I Learned This Year
I decided to pick the first and last post by Mr. McClung so I could compare his outlook on teaching between the years.
In the 2008-2009 version of "What I Learned This Year" Mr. McClung first discusses how a teacher needs to keep the students in mind over his or her superior. The comprehension of the students is what the teacher is aiming for while winning the acceptance of his or her superior while doing so. Do what you came to do and everything should fall in place. The second thing he discusses is that plans don't always work out. Yes you may have worked hours or even days on lesson plans but things change. The delivery of the lesson and the students process will always determine how the plan goes. I believe he is trying to say to allow the change to come in. In doing so, you can teach yourself to prepare for new situations. The third concept he talks about is communication. "Communication is the pathway to building that much desired rapport with fellow teachers." He says that it may seem simple but it actually hard to develop relationships with teachers and students around but as a teacher you need this to succeed. Fourth he says we need to stay reasonable. It is o.k. to challenge our students but don't become disappointed in them if they don't meet your expectations. If the student is working to their full potential be happy. Encouragement works much better than disapproval or signs of disappointment. The fifth concept he discusses is don't be afraid of technology! This is so true in so many ways. Technology will not hinder us it will only help us as teachers. The internet opens up so many doors to new possibilities. Sixth his point made is always listen to your students. I believe showing interest in the smallest things children say can help them open up with the more important issues they are dealing with. He tells of how a student said,"I know my teacher cares about me as a person when he. - Listens to what I say." This by itself moves mountains. It is important to show your students you interested in everything they have to say. The seventh issue he brings up is to never stop learning. As teachers we owe it to ourselves. Why should we not continue learning if we are teaching students to learn. We need to set good examples.
In the 2011-2012 version of "What I Learned This Year" Mr. McClung says "You Gotta Dance With Who You Came To Dance With." This is an important concept when becoming a teacher and an adult. Sometimes adults get lost in their self image and of what others think of them. Mr. McClung had problems with being a pleasing others he lost touch with why he was a teacher. Sometimes you have to back away from the situation and center yourself. After doing so Mr. McClung realized that he started off with a simple question of "Is the Kids having Fun?" He says, "As long as I stick to this rule and remember who I really work for then I should never divert down the wrong path." I completely agree with him. I believe it is crucial to stay true to yourself and remind yourself your purpose as a teacher. "Challenge Yourself" is also a topic of his 2011-2012 post. He tells of how he had sunk into a comfortable spot within his career so he reused many lessons causing students to become bored. He became lazy and his creativeness was slowly disappearing. He was offered an opportunity o change his routine up. With accepting the new grade level and the new subject he came out of his trance and wanted to put the effort into his teaching again. He is basically trying to get across to teachers that you should not be afraid of change. Especially if it will better you and your students in the long run. Challenging yourself only means to push for your best. What's wrong with your best? NOTHING!

How We Dream
In "How We Dream Part I", Miller tells of the incremental changes of going from pencil and paper to using laptops. He discusses how our work space is now on the desktop of our computers and with a simple click of a button we can open research from around the world. When writing with media people can now work together over a network to create print, sound and visual documents without ever meeting in person.
I often use the information presented in "How We Dream" on a daily basis. I can't think of the last time I actually stepped foot into a library to research a topic from reference books. Media makes research much easier and convenient than before. This video also made me realize how much I rely on my laptop over pencil and paper. It is so much easier to use Google docs for projects being made by more than one person. I no longer have to stress about meeting times or places.
In "How We Dream Part II", Miller tells of how fundamental changes happen before our eyes. He believes that by using social media our culture will be more accepting to new ideas. As educators we should be open to share our knowledge and ideas with others around the world. The information we submit to the web will last longer than the information in books because people will do away with books when the web is ever going.
I believe that in a simple way we can think of social media as our way to contributing to our future. The more information that we can share with others the more education we can spread. I know that for me teaching someone something new is the most important reward at the end of the day. I believe that if you can see what the happiest city in the world is at any given time then anything is possible. Just take the time to seek the endless opportunities social media has to offer.
Carly Pugh's Blogpost 12
Carly hit the nail right on the head when creating her assignment. Reading and watching her you tube playlist I realized exactly what Miller meant by his hopes of writing with social media. Each and every one of her example videos were entertaining and educating. She demonstrated social media by including print with videos throughout her post. I enjoyed watching The Crazy Ones, Creativity, grease spot and Six Questions
Chipper and EDM for Dummies Chipper is obviously in denial. This video shows what the average person accomplishes in EDM as far as deadlines go but it also shows how the average person will only get out what they put into the course. The more time a student prepares for the class the more the student will learn or educate themselves. If students could really buy the EDM for Dummies they would realize that the key to EDM is to learn to learn. Once a student is able to tackle this concept the rest of the assignments are easy. Yes they are time consuming but in the end the students learns more from doing it on his or her own than to just burp back the information given. I think for this class I could or would like to help other students with time management. Time management plays a big role in being able to teach yourself online since it is so easy to get side tracked!
Learn To Change, Change To Learn
I understand the fact that classrooms of the past were set up to resemble the average factory but what is mind boggling is the fact that classrooms are still set up this way. We are now in the twenty first century we as teachers must incorporate the technology at hand instead of the situations of the past. I phones and I pads should be allowed in school. Children should broaden their knowledge with technology by using their everyday gadgets. Teachers should realize that the times have changed so our educating techniques need to change also. Teachers should allow students to explore the possibilities with new web tools.
Scavenger Hunt, Web 2.0 and Web 2.0 Tools
My Edmodo is much like Facebook. Its a social network site that allows teachers to easy access to parent communication, teacher communication and told to use within class time. I classified myself as a teacher when I created my profile. In doing so I was able to open numerous ideas I can use once I am a teacher. I will definitely use this tool in the future!!!
Poll Everywhere allowed me to create my own poll. After experimenting with the tabs on this site I realized I was able to add any question to my poll I wanted. Once you decide on your question you can chose an open ended answer or a multiple choice answer. If choosing a multiple choice question, you can add pictures to the answers for your poll. As a teacher I could use the feedback from this tool to help me prepare for my students.
Pixton is a cool way to make comic strips. When creating the comic strip you can choose from eight different types of comics. The next step is to create your comic and this site makes this simple. You then publish your work. I believe this would be a helpful tool in a classroom to get the attention of students. This could be an extra way to get the point across.

Reaching Out to the Community
Ms. Lara Bishop's blog told of how her pre-k students helped reach out to the community for the holidays. The four year old's families contributed food for families in need. She discusses how this project is good way to teach the students compassion and to be considerate of one another.
When reading this I felt that more teachers need to focus on aspects like this. I told Ms. Lara how proud I was of her students for reaching out to the community and I plan to accomplish this within my classroom one day.
Dr. Strange I Owe It To You
When going back to "The Jungle's" page I realized Ms.Lara must be busy with her pre-K students since there were no updates so I chose a post instead. In I owe it to you, She explains how she learned new teaching techniques from Dr.Strange that she would have never thought of. She also explained how she has introduced her pre-K students to computers. I feel this will be so beneficial to them in the long haul. The earlier we can teach them the easier it will be for them to make transitions through new technology.
Her class is truly an inspiration to me! I look forward to using the tools Dr. Strange has introduced me to, to find my own ways in teaching my classroom like Ms. Lara has done.

Randy Pausch's last lecture
Randy Pausch was a family man. His lectures was one way he could teach his kids even after he was gone. In the Last Lecture Randy Pausch discussed different approaches one can take throughout life. I believe the three main topics he tried to cover was childhood dreams, empowering others dreams, and lessons learned.
Pausch begins his lecture with how important dreams are to young children and their future. As educators we must realize how significant a child's dreams are to them. Teachers can help encourage students branch off of their dreams and make even bigger ones. He tells how we should always show students we believe in them but not to expect too much because that could be detrimental, Instead give them motivation to better themselves.
There are many ways teachers can inspire the students to dream big. Some of the ways he discussed was to teach values to everyone. Students need to know to be honest, sincere, and noble. I think that teachers should focus on this daily. Some students look to them because their home lacks these values. Also students should know how to take criticism. Constructive criticism should only make a student better not worse. So showing these students how to make themselves better can help them accomplish their dreams.
He spoke of how road blocks are not there to keep us out but to make us work harder. Living life we realize disasters happen but its then we realize how strong we are. He also talks about students hitting a brick wall. This wall is eh end for the ones who don't try hard enough. As teachers we all want our students to succeed so we have to destroy the walls built so the students can have vast dreams.
Watching his video made me appreciate the time I have on Earth. He is an exceptional motivational speaker. I always want to be the best I can be but now I want to try even harder!

C4K Summary for February
Graham's Blog
My first C4K was for Graham, a ninth grade history student. He talked of the differences that could have been made during World War One if they had modern hospitals at the time. He used humor throughout his blog since it was suppose to be a comical blog post.
My comment included that I enjoyed reading his comment about modern hospitals in WWI. I have never heard of the disease Dysentery and now since reading his post and researching I completely understand his humorous comment of “more men wouldn't be caught with their pants down”. I told him that I believe his post was not only informative but interesting and to keep up the good work!
Trent W's blog
My second C4K was for Trent W., a second grade Canadian student from Mrs. Balestin's class. He wrote about his exciting experience playing hockey. When commenting to Trent I congratulated him on his win. I also asked him what other sports he plays.
Ms. She's Class blog
My third C4K was for Ms. She's Room 6 in Pt England. First I wished all the students a good school year on the class blog then I commented on Pare's Blog and Paiheretia's blog. On Pare's blog I told her that I was also starting a new class which was EDM 310. I told her I hope she has a wonderful time in room 6. On Paiheretia's blog I noticed that her parent had commented on how good she was doing in reading so I congratulated her in her accomplishments and that I have a daughter the same age as her so I know how hard shes working.
Labron's Blog
My fourth C4K was for Labron, a tenth grade English student from Bay Minette. He didn't have his assignment listed but after looking on other blogs I realized he had to list ten lies told to him in high school. I didn't agree with some of the things listed. Instead of being negative I just reminded him teachers are trying to change the world one step at a time. His coach wasn't lying when saying his ball team will win state championship but rather he was trying to show the team he believed in them.

Project #9
I decided to use Symbaloo for my Personal Learning Network. Symbaloo helps organize and make sites easier to access while teaching myself connectivism. I grouped my emails together, my social networks together, and miscellaneous together. I have found that Twitter is a useful tool in finding resources to use in teaching. Reading teachers post made me realize that helping each other can really make teaching easier.

Project #10
The Right Tool
I am an elementary major and I lean more to the Math subject so I searched for tools I could use to teach Math. While researching Gliffy turned out to be an interesting and helpful tool for teachers of any grade. This tool can be used in presentation, organization or a learning project for students. Gliffy gives you options between blank templates for charts, diagrams, flowcharts, website designs and even floor plans! I feel that as a teacher I could use many of these blank templates during lectures to help students understand how to use and apply different charts and diagrams to help out in all subjects.

Blog Post #6
The Networked Student
Wendy Drexler created The Networked Student to better explain connectivism. Connectivism is the theory in which learning occurs as part of a social network with many people connecting through technology. This video talks about a high school student with a Personal Learning Environmentsthat highly resembles students in EDM 310. EDM 310 students are learning through Personal Learning Network. This student only goes to the school one day a week and the rest is completed online. Textbooks will soon be in the past and using Connectivism will introduce students to more extensive ways to gain knowledge.
Sites mentioned throughout the video are helpful when researching. Many of us hasn't made the connection that iTunes has access to audio and video pod-casts that are not only entertaining but also educational. In the video the student used his resources to view lectures made by different professors around the world. He can reuse information he found in blogs to educate his followers. The network student has to use information management daily. He has to be able to know the difference between his Google, Delicious, and Skype accounts. Classroom time falls around this.
Why do we need a teacher? Why not Google it? Google has answers for just about everything but we still need teachers. Teachers are there for guidance and they help students communicate properly with the world. A teacher catches the mistakes a student would make throughout a blog whereas Google will not. A teacher also shows the student what information is worth having and sharing when Google gives students the good, the bad, and the ugly! Teachers will be around even when technology takes over. People have to have guidance, Don't they?

Blog Post #5
Krissy Venosdale's School
Krissy Venosdale is a teacher who cares a lot for creativity in schools. She believes that once you finish learning you are finished teaching. In her example of the the perfect school Krissy Venosdale has a wonderful idea for a creative and easy flowing learning process. The school is there to grab the attention of the students with neon colors and tree houses in the library. Her school allows students to learn at their own pace and advance when ready. Krissy Venosdale's school not only focuses on the students but the teachers also by having colorful signs in parking lots to remind them of how lucky they are to be a teacher.
I love the use of the comfortable setting she wants to give the kids.I believe that the environment in which the students are in plays a major role in how much they are interested in what they are being taught. If I could create my own school I would like to focus on teaching the students how to "learn". I would like touchscreen computers in the walls of the colorful hallways. So they have the world at their fingertips. I would like to involve the students in more hands on experiences throughout the community. That way they can get a feel of the skills being taught. I would have assistant teachers in every classroom. I would encourage students to take in consideration of their surroundings and the community in which they live. I would make the children realize that people make the world into what it is so they should take precautions of their actions.
I am a blogger
When reading Jennifer Chambers post it made me realize the difference between a person that blogs and a "Blogger". When blogging you are doing it for one of two reasons: have to or want to. In her situation she saw something that was interesting and immediately posted it for the world to see. While doing this she realized that she didn't do it because it was an assignment but because she enjoyed hearing it and wanted to share it. A blogger post videos, articles, and information for the knowledge of knowing not because they are required to.
Eric Whitacre's choir
Jennifer Chambers had an amazing discovery of Eric Whitacre's choir. This choir was organized completely through technolgy. It is so neat how Eric Whitacre was able to unite people from twelve different countries and create a choir that looks like they are all in the same place. The sound is magnificent but doesn't come close to the complexity of the arrangement of different videos placed together as a whole. This choir is a perfect way to show that we can be one even if we are separated over many miles.
Teaching in the Twenty First Century
This presentation broadens the idea of teaching. What should we expect when teaching in the twenty first century? We are no longer teaching the what, when, and how. All of this can be found on the internet. Yes children can teach themselves the facts but can they really understand the concept without a teacher helping break it down? In the twenty first century teachers are wasting time if they teach the facts when the students can access them alone. Teachers should be focused on teaching children how to apply the skills they have been taught. Adults in general need to teach the younger generations how to consider the situation and determine the best decisions to make.
Flipped Classroom
Katie Gimbar's, Dr. Lodge McCammon's, and Ms. Munafo's you tube videos were useful in explaining what flipping is. When "flipping" the teacher takes the lecture out of the classroom and sends it home and changes homework into classwork. This allows the students practice using computers, additional access to review lectures, and more time in the classroom with the teacher to go over questions. In this process the students are able to grasp more information in the same amount of time that is allowed in class during the day.
I believe that this technique will be beneficial to my classroom and plan to use it in the future. I want to extend the time I get to interact with the kids so that I can see who needs more help on each topic. Flipping my classroom is also a good way for parents to see what their children are doing in class and they could participate more in the learning process.
